D. L. Moody was an American preacher and evangelist whose work within the urban revivalist movement of the late 19th century made him one of the most widely heard English-speaking preachers in the world. Like many of his books, The Way to God and How to Find It was written with an evangelistic goal to present Christianity as Moody understood it to as wide of an audience as possible. By using a plainspoken style understandable not only by the educated elite but also to the layperson, Moody created a work of religious literature that was unusually accessible for its era.

The Way to God and How to Find It is a collection of sermons given by Moody during his travels around the world which together form a roadmap for understanding Christianity according to Moody’s theological perspective. The majority of the book focuses on how a nonbeliever can become a Christian, citing examples from scripture and relating the points to familiar examples and anecdotes to keep the text approachable. The final chapter is addressed to “backsliders,” or Christians who are no longer actively living their faith, and how they can rediscover the way to God.

The theology laid out by Moody in this book is explicitly non-denominational in nature, relying on specific examples in the Bible to make its points rather than the history or tradition of any particular church or denomination—a philosophy which has been highly influential in American evangelical Christianity.
